American Express Blue Cash Everyday® Card fees
The regular APR on this card depends on several factors that include their credit history, income, existing debts and more.
Potential cardholders concerned about high interest rates on their credit card can rest easy knowing that interest is only charged on the balance that remains after each monthly statement. If you pay the full balance on your card each month, you are never charged any interest on those purchases.
Blue Cash Everyday® Card benefits
American Express currently provides $150 cash back for Blue Cash Everyday® Card holders if the cardholder spends $1,000 on purchases within the first six months of card opening.
Cash back at supermarkets, gas stations and department stores
The most generous cash back reward of the Blue Cash Everyday® Card is 3% at U.S. supermarkets. If you make most of your everyday purchases at a qualifying supermarkets or grocery stores, the Blue Cash Everyday® Card is excellent value.
The 3% cash back reward applies to up to $6,000 a year in spending at supermarkets, before shifting back to 1% cash back on future purchases. There is, however, a downside to the offer, as American Express does not consider superstores like Walmart or warehouse clubs like Costco in their definition of supermarkets. Check the American Express website for the full list of supermarkets that are included in the offer before deciding whether to apply for this cash back card.
The Blue Cash Everyday® Card also comes with 2% cash back at U.S. gas stations and select U.S. department stores. The gas station perk may appeal to people who spend a lot of time on the road: you can earn 2% cash back every time you fill up your car or buy snacks at a gas station on a road trip.
The cash back offer at department stores can benefit those who frequently purchase household goods. You can browse a list of included department stores, but be warned that while American Express considers Macy’s and Kohl’s as department stores, popular retailers like Walmart and Target are not on the list.
Every other transaction carries a cash back reward of 1%, while American Express requires a minimum of $25 earned in cash back before cardholders can redeem them for statement credits.
Receiving cash back on every purchase is not the only reason that shoppers can enjoy this particular American Express card. The company offers extended warranties on items with a warranty of less than five years.
Cardholders can also return items of up to $300 value within 90 days of purchase if the merchant refuses to take the item back. The perk is valid for up to $1,000 spent on different items throughout the year.
There is also damage and loss coverage of items that lasts for 90 days from the day of purchase and covers up to $1,000 per item and $50,000 over the year. Think of the added protection for expensive purchases like laptops, smartphones or televisions.
While the Blue Cash Everyday® Card is not necessarily designed with travelers in mind, it still offers valuable perks for people who travel a few times a year.
The card offers rental car insurance coverage for damage and collisions, which allows cardholders to skip expensive rental car company coverage. American Express also has a 24/7 Global Assist Hotline that cardholders can use when they are 100 miles or further from home.
Plan It service for significant purchases
American Express makes it easier for cardholders to split up expensive purchases. With its Plan It feature, valuable purchases can be split up into several months of payments. Rather than paying interest on those payments, Amex only charges a fixed monthly fee.
The Plan It feature is even more appealing to new cardholders. If you are within 15 months of your account opening, and you schedule a Plan It purchase within those months, there is no fee for the service.
Should you apply for the Blue Cash Everyday® Card?
If you have good to excellent credit history in the U.S or your home country, and you plan to spend the bulk of your credit card purchases at qualifying supermarkets, department stores, and gas stations, the American Express Blue Cash Everyday® Card is a good value.
The ability to earn 3% cash back on up to $6,000 U.S. supermarket purchases as well as unlimited 2% at department stores and gas stations can help you rack up statement credits very easily.
There are other cards, such as the Barclaycard CashForward World MasterCard, that provide 1.5% cash back on every purchase. Such a card is great for people who want to shop everywhere and not limit themselves to specific supermarkets, gas stations or department stores.
The Blue Cash Everyday® Card, however, can offer better value for cash back if the cardholder does not mind picking and choosing where they buy groceries, household goods, and gas.
American Express also commits to keeping the existing cash back rewards and categories on the Blue Cash Everyday® Card the same. Cards such as the Chase Freedom have appealing cash back rewards, but they shift the categories every quarter, which makes it difficult for cardholders to keep up with the best way to gain rewards on the card.
Where does the Amex Blue Cash Everyday® Card fall short?
Amex cards are widely accepted in most major cities like New York, San Francisco, Seattle or Boston, but if you live in a smaller city or in the suburbs, check if the retailers near your home or work accept American Express.
If you travel internationally frequently, be careful before you charge this card abroad: the Blue Cash Everyday® Card comes with a 2.7% fee for every transaction outside of the U.S.
The American Express Blue Cash Everyday® Card is a great card option for people who frequently shop at U.S. supermarkets. The cash back rewards for gas stations and department stores are also beneficial if you take long road trips and buy many of your goods at major retailers around the country.
With appealing travel perks, no annual fee, a decent welcome bonus, and a minimum 1% cash back on every purchase, cardholders should not have any problem accumulating statement credits from American Express annually.
